ultrasoundWe had an ultrasound today for Baby Zen and were thrown a little curve ball. Have you figured out what’s wrong with the ultrasound picture we posted yet? If not, I’ll give you a hint… Baby Zen will be wearing a lot more blue then pink growing up. That’s right. As most of you know, we wanted to be surprised with the sex of our baby. However, we accidently found out the sex of the baby during our last ultrasound. We still got surprised! Today, I was joking with the ultrasound tech and asked… “There is still only 1 girl in there?” The tech responded with a sort of soft “ummm no” For a split second, I thought the tech was being cheeky. Then the tech said.. “See this big circle? That is one of the testicles.” Claire and I were in shock and could do nothing but laugh. Well, I guess we sort of got surprised about the sex of our baby.

Growing UpEvery day our little boy shows signs of growing up. He has all but rejected baby food and insists on taste testing whatever Mom and Dad happen to be eating. He has learned that he can CLIMB and has taken his exploration to another level- literally. I have actually found him standing atop the dining room table, looking quite pleased with himself. The coolest new devlopment is that Brendan is actually showing signs that he comprehends what we’re saying. He’s beginning to follow simple directions, albeit with some selective hearing, and communicate with us. One night this week I was singing to him while getting him ready for bed. He looked at me and began doing the hand motions for the Itsy Bitsy Spider. I was amazed on two fronts 1)that he remembered the song and the appropriate hand motions and 2) that he was requesting that I continue singing. Every single day he seems to learn something new that brings him further from being a baby and closer to being a little boy.

Zen 20 WeekAs you may recall when we were expectig Brendan we did not want to know the sex of the baby. At our 13 week ultasound we didn’t think they could even determine the sex so we didn’t bother to let the tech know we wanted the gender to be a surprise. After a few minutes of staring at the fuzzy blobs on screen the tech made some comment referring to the fact that the baby was a boy and then back-tracked with “You wanted to find out the sex right?”

This past week we had our 20 week ultrasound for Baby Zen. We were a little smarter this time and told the tech we wanted the sex of the baby to be a surprsie before she’d even turned on all her equipment. At the appropriate time she told us to avert our eyes, lest we catch a glimpse of the baby’s goods. We left the ultrasound with the baby’s gender still a mystery.

Fast forward to two days later when I had my regular check-up with the mid-wife. She brought in the ultrasound report to show me some growth charts and the baby’s measurements and asked me to take a look at it with her. It never occurred to me that the baby’s gender would be on the report. So I scanned all the baby’s measurements and discovered… Baby Zen is a little girl!

Maybe we can be surprised with the gender of Baby #3….

A New Movie is coming out around October 5th. It looks like a first of its kind… A horror movie with a happy ending?

Here are the first pictures of Baby Zen. These ultrasound pictures were taken a few weeks ago at 12 weeks. I don’t know about you, but sometimes the ultrasound pictures don’t look like much of anything. I’ve included a guide picture to help you see Baby Zen. Just click on the pictures to make them larger.

1st BDay

Brendan’s first Birthday has come and gone. We visited all the Grandparents on the East Coast for the weekend and had a great time. We can’t wait to move back when Claire finishes dental school so we can see them more often. However, I know once we move back we’ll probably be longing for the days we lived in Chicago. I can’t help but think we’ll turn into the ‘Barones’ (see Everybody Loves Raymond) once we move back to the East Coast. Not that being like the ‘Barones’ would be the worst thing that could happen. But… I digress.

The first year of parenting has lived up to the hype. I’ve learned more than I every thought possible about myself and about what true unconditional love is. Before Brendan was born, so many other parents said it’s like nothing else in the World and that I wouldn’t and couldn’t understand it before I experienced being a father myself…. And how right they were. I’ve had a blast watching Brendan grow and develop his own little personality. I feel we’ve been very blessed to have such a happy baby that doesn’t fuss too much. I just hope this doesn’t mean that our second child is going to be a holy terror. I guess time will tell.

I’ve made a DVD of his 1st year that i’ll be posting soon. The title of the DVD is ‘Tiny Toon Adventures’ keeping with the movie theme of Brendan’s birth announcement. It’s over an hour long which means…. zzzz… snore… zzzz. if you are not part of the family or he’s not your child/grandchild/nephew. But, I will post the chapters of the DVD anyway for all to see. Stay tuned.

Image Title Brendan has been proudly wearing his new onesie- it says “Big Brother in Training”. That’s right there’s another little Toon on the way! We saw the first pictures of Baby Zen yesterday and discovered that the new arrival is due October 5. We’re all very excited, particularly Brendan, who has lots of training to do before he becomes a big brother.
