Potty Training and Black Eyes

pottytrain1Again, it's been awhile since there has been an entry on the site. I have no excuses except for work has been very busy and the 2 boys are keeping us tired. I used to think that we went to sleep early because we couldn't make it past 10:30 pm. Now, it seems I can't make it past 10:00 or even 9:30 some nights. Here's the latest happenings in Chicago.

pottytrain2IT'S FREEZING! Poor Brendan is trapped inside all day at daycare are and at home. We try to get him outside when it's possible but on days like today (single digit temps) there is no way. We're lucky if he doesn't get frost bite just from the house to the car to daycare. We've started the process of TRYING to Potty Train. It's going very very slow. He's a little young and don't want to push too hard. From the pictures above, we're still trying to get him to also read the paper while sitting on the potty and not while we are changing his diaper. B is loving daycare and all his new friends. Pablo is one of his pals from daycare and we must hear his name about 50 times a day on the weekends. Pablo's Mom also said that she hears Brendan's name at their house on the weekend but it's only when Pablo has gotten into trouble and he's trying to blame it on Brendan. Ha... True friendship. The last bit of B news is that yesterday morning he crawled out of his crib. He has a small shiner to prove it. I guess it's time to move Patrick into the crib and Brendan into a toddler bed.

Brendan Patrick PlaySpeaking of Patrick. He's doing great. I think he's looking more and more like Brendan but Claire thinks not so much. We're very blessed that he has the same cheerful big smile personality that Brendan has. We're working on getting him on more of a sleep schedule during the day and going a little longer at night. Right now, he usually wakes up once during the night which is not too bad. He's rolled over a few times already and is starting to realize that he controls those two things (hands) that flop around in front of him and land in his mouth occasionally.

Brendan MomClaire is busy with school and can't wait to be done. She truly amazes me everyday that she juggles everything well (being a great Mom, school, and putting up with me) and on limited sleep. The next few months are going to be crazy as we get ready to move back East to be closer to friends and family. New pictures are posted in the photos section and I'm going to try to put up .mov or .avi files of the YouTube videos. I know some can't view the YouTube stuff because it's blocked at work. Well, back to work for me. Bye for now.

What's Wrong With This Picture?

ultrasoundWe had an ultrasound today for Baby Zen and were thrown a little curve ball. Have you figured out what's wrong with the ultrasound picture we posted yet? If not, I'll give you a hint... Baby Zen will be wearing a lot more blue then pink growing up. That's right. As most of you know, we wanted to be surprised with the sex of our baby. However, we accidently found out the sex of the baby during our last ultrasound. We still got surprised! Today, I was joking with the ultrasound tech and asked... "There is still only 1 girl in there?" The tech responded with a sort of soft "ummm no" For a split second, I thought the tech was being cheeky. Then the tech said.. "See this big circle? That is one of the testicles." Claire and I were in shock and could do nothing but laugh. Well, I guess we sort of got surprised about the sex of our baby.

0 for 2

Zen 20 WeekAs you may recall when we were expectig Brendan we did not want to know the sex of the baby. At our 13 week ultasound we didn't think they could even determine the sex so we didn't bother to let the tech know we wanted the gender to be a surprise. After a few minutes of staring at the fuzzy blobs on screen the tech made some comment referring to the fact that the baby was a boy and then back-tracked with "You wanted to find out the sex right?"

This past week we had our 20 week ultrasound for Baby Zen. We were a little smarter this time and told the tech we wanted the sex of the baby to be a surprsie before she'd even turned on all her equipment. At the appropriate time she told us to avert our eyes, lest we catch a glimpse of the baby's goods. We left the ultrasound with the baby's gender still a mystery.

Fast forward to two days later when I had my regular check-up with the mid-wife. She brought in the ultrasound report to show me some growth charts and the baby's measurements and asked me to take a look at it with her. It never occurred to me that the baby's gender would be on the report. So I scanned all the baby's measurements and discovered... Baby Zen is a little girl!

Maybe we can be surprised with the gender of Baby #3....

Come and Gone... another milestone

1st BDay

Brendan's first Birthday has come and gone. We visited all the Grandparents on the East Coast for the weekend and had a great time. We can't wait to move back when Claire finishes dental school so we can see them more often. However, I know once we move back we'll probably be longing for the days we lived in Chicago. I can't help but think we'll turn into the 'Barones' (see Everybody Loves Raymond) once we move back to the East Coast. Not that being like the 'Barones' would be the worst thing that could happen. But... I digress.

The first year of parenting has lived up to the hype. I've learned more than I every thought possible about myself and about what true unconditional love is. Before Brendan was born, so many other parents said it's like nothing else in the World and that I wouldn't and couldn't understand it before I experienced being a father myself.... And how right they were. I've had a blast watching Brendan grow and develop his own little personality. I feel we've been very blessed to have such a happy baby that doesn't fuss too much. I just hope this doesn't mean that our second child is going to be a holy terror. I guess time will tell.

I've made a DVD of his 1st year that i'll be posting soon. The title of the DVD is 'Tiny Toon Adventures' keeping with the movie theme of Brendan's birth announcement. It's over an hour long which means.... zzzz... snore... zzzz. if you are not part of the family or he's not your child/grandchild/nephew. But, I will post the chapters of the DVD anyway for all to see. Stay tuned.

TIME CAPSULE

BI wish I could take B the way he is now and bottle him up. Keep him this age forever. I'm having the time of my life with B. He's got his own personality. We're buddies. We hang out. We watch a little ESPN, the Chicago BEARS, wrestle, and all that other good stuff that Dad's do with a son his age. I'm sure once the weather gets nicer we'll go cruise the Lake Front for chicks too. Well, B will cruise and I'll be his wing man and push his stroller. Even though he can't talk yet, B still communicates with smiles, giggles, hands clapping in excitement, grunts, and the many different types of cries, screams, and whines. The only four letter words out his mouth right now are Mama and Dada. I'm sure the other four letter words will be flying out of his mouth before we know it. This sort of thing is the reason I wish I could prevent him from growing up. B's also getting better at walking every day. However, he still sometimes walks like a drunken sailor and will take a good plop on his bottom. I love watching him try to figure out everything and comprehend the World around him. I don't think it could get any better then it is right now.

There are some things that are not great about B at this stage in his life. But the good far out way the bad. Just so you know that it's not all rainbows and sunshine at the Toon household, I've listed some of the not so great things below:

- B wakes up at 5:00 am every morning. He has not learned that weekends are for sleeping in.
- Stinky diapers. Now that he eats more solids and meats, trash must be taken out every other day. NO EXCEPTIONS!
- He can't just tell us what the problem is. Instead he just gets very frustrated with us until we can figure it out.
- Heavy... I never realized how heavy 22 lbs is after holding him for 20 min.
- Everything goes into the mouth... brick walls, remotes, clothes, shoes... you get the picture.

Other than that, there is nothing really new to report with the Toon household. It's pretty much business as usual for us. I've finally gotten around to posting pictures from Christmas and some from January. Click on "Photos" link in the menu bar at the top or click here.

ONE SMALL STEP FOR B

Astronaut BWe didn't get it on video but Mommy and Auntie Jennifer got to see it. B took his first step yesterday, one day after he started to really stand on his own. What can we say? He's a quick study... lol. This picture was taken later that day at the Aviation Museum in Long Island. We were there with my cousin Marilyn and her children. It was a good time.

ALL B WANTS FOR CHRISTMAS

B and SantaWe took B to see The Old Fat Man... a.k.a. Santa on Friday. Santa gave him a little beanie baby but I'm sure all B was asking for was Cheerios. These days that's all that B seems to want. We took him to a place called Christmas Village a few towns over from Claire's parents. Claire's Mom was taken there as a child too. It was a pretty cool place.... but if my wife asks, I will deny I said any such a thing. Two hours waiting outside in the cold to see Santa turned Daddy into a little of a Grinch. :-) I'm glad we did it but I also know it was more for Mommy and Nana then B. He won't remember Santa from the Salvation Army guy ringing a bell outside the grocery store. This might be a good tradition to start with Nana and Grandpa. As an added bonus, Daddy won''t have to stand in line in the cold next year. I guess we'll just have to wait and see next year. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas...

Old School...

Image Title I came across this product the other day and can't imagine who buys one of these for their child. Maybe I'm a little old school. I had one of those fathers who said "Let him touch the hot stove. He won't do it again." when I was growning up. I can understand not wanting your kid to knock their noggin but kids are kids in my opinion. They need to experience different things and learn there are certain consequences for specfic actions (like head-butting the coffee table). I'm sure I knocked my noggin a few times while I was growing up and I turned out OK. I know, OK is relative.... It's similar to the theory that kids need germs around while growing up to build up antibodies. Who hasn't eaten dirt when they were little? My other complaint with this product is that it looks like an upside down diaper on your kids head. If you want a helmet for your kid, just give them a plastic bowl to wear on their head. :-) That's what we do.

Our boy is mobile

Image TitleWe knew this day would come. Brendan is now full on crawling. The care-free days of putting him down and knowing he wasn't moving from that spot are completely gone. We now spend a good portion of our days trying to make sure he's staying in baby-friendly areas of the loft....and suddenly we're realizing how very baby-unfriendly our place is- the sharp corners, the uncapped outlets, and did I mention the WIRES?

God help us when he starts walking.

Our Little Pumpkin

PumpkinThe weather in Chicago was sunny and in the upper 70's today. We decided to take advantage of it and headed out to Kuipers Family Farm about an hour outside of Chicago. We were excited to have Little B experience getting some fresh apples, cider, and visiting a pumpkin patch for the first time. When we arrived and saw the parking lot, we realized that everyone else in Chicago had the same idea. The line to buy and pick apples was crazy. Although Claire was a little disappointed we didn't get any apples, we still had a great time. You can see the pictures from our day here.

I've also put some videos up on the web for everyone to download too. They can be found in this directory and you can view/save them by right clicking on the file and choosing save as. Some of the videos are him in a swing, him laughing (very large file), B laughing (smaller file), and him sneezing (one of my favorite). I'll probably look to put them up on youtube in the future. Stay tooned.... I know. That was bad.

Another Milestone

Brendan reached another milestone this afternoon- we're proud to announce that he can sit-up unassisted! He's still working on the balancing bit (Read: he does still occasionally fall over face first) but that will come with more practice. In other news there is a new tooth poking through which means that he has been even droolier than usual. (sniff) Our little boy is growing up so fast.

Capturing the many faces of B

Faces of BLike any adult walking around in the World today, B has about a thousand different looks at four months old. Thank God for digital cameras. We are not trying to document everyone of them but find that have captured a lot of them digitaly. In actuality, we are only trying to capture the cute ones. This sounds a lot easier than it is. I don't have any idea how parents captured cute pictures of babies before there were digital cameras. Maybe this explains why there are so few baby pictures of me. Nope... I'm pretty sure it's because I was a third child. For every 10 to 15 pictures we take, there is 1 photo that is worth keeping. Don't get me wrong... We keep all of them :-). You never know when they might be worth something someday. Either as blackmail or to sell to the tabloids when he becomes famous. For now, I'm finding that the pictures tell a nice story when put all together. This is just one example. I'm going to start posting more of these in the future.

1 Year is Forever

Pregnancy Test1 year ago today is when we found out that we were going to have a little Buddha. I forgot all about it but Claire reminded me in the way that wives do. "Do you know what tomorrow is?". My heart started racing. My mind started going a mile a minute trying to figure out if I had forgottena date that I should be able to produce before she finishes her sentence. I was drawing blanks and getting real nervous. She just smiled and reminded me. I don't know how I could forget the date that took the World as I knew it and turned it upside down.
After a certain age, years and birthdays fly by. At least for me, they sort of blend into one another. This past year flew by but definitelydid not blend in with the others. I still can't believe all the memories I take from this past year. I'm sure this next year will bring many more.

So Vain

Ava and BrendanWe've discovered that B is very vain. He loves to look at himself in the mirror. He would probably do it most of the day if he could stand on his own. It's cute to see him react to his own facial expressions. You can also tell he gets confused a little to hear Mommy or Daddy's voice come from behind him yet he sees us right in front of him. From what we read, most babies/toddlers love other babies. Ever notice how little children will almost always look in other strollers? I wonder if those coos and gagas we hear is a universal language that they understand. Probably not as complex as in the movie Look Who's Talking... :-). More evidence are these pictures that were taken a few weeks ago when Nicole came over with Ava (about one year older than B). You can click the picture to see a larger version. It was amazing to see how she looked and interacted with B. Any who, I guess we'll keep putting B in front of the mirror because he seems to like it. I guess everyone will blame us he falls in love with himself.
New photos are also posted here in the 4th month gallery.

Emergency Stash

Breast MilkEveryone has one. An emergency stash of something that is hidden somewhere. For some people it's junk food in the back of the cabinet, others hide a roll of hundos in an old sock in the sock drawer. And no... if you come to our place looking to rob us, we don't keep our cash in the sock drawer. B is no exception. He keeps a stash of breast milk in the freezer. He's worried that when Mommy is at school, he might go hungry. Well, last weekend I found his stash when cleaning out the freezer. It was hard to miss considering it takes up 3/4 of the space.
Seriously, we figured it was time to organize the stores after a frozen bag of breast milk hit me on the foot 3 times in a row when opening the freezer door. I had to put one of Claire's shoes in the picture to give it some point of reference. I knew we had a lot of milk in the freezer but didn't realize how much until there was a mound of it sitting in the middle of our kitchen. Unbelievable. It's only a matter of time before we have nothing in the freezer except breast milk. When I first went to the store to buy storage bags, I thought a box of 25 bags would last at least a few weeks. Now, it seems like I'm going to Target every week to buy storage bags. Just another cost associated with raising a baby but well worth it.

New pictures have been posted here. I've been getting a lot of requests for updates to the site more often. I know... I know... I need to do a better job. I'm going to shoot for at least 2-3 times a week going forward to keep the public happy.Bye for now.

Bradley Reunion

BradleyThis picture was taken yesterday at our Bradley Reunion. Bradley was the birthing method that Claire chose to take to help her deliver Brendan naturally with no pain meds. We can not say enough good things about this method and how it helped us tremendously. I would recommend it to anyone (even if they are not planning on a med free child birth). The education you get about the whole birthing process better prepares you for what might or probably would happen during birth. They also talk about things like pregnancy nutrition and post pregnancy things.

Claire and I had a blast seeing all the little babies that were close in age to Brendan. The youngest was around 1 month old to the oldest who was around 6 months old. It's always nice to know we are not the only parents dealing with all the challenges and joys of raising your first child.

Diagnosed

B HospitalWell as most of you know, Brendan was hospitalized two weekends ago. This week we went in for his 2 month checkup and shots. They gave us the results of all the tests they took and basically don't know what happened. As of late, he has been a little more fussy than normal and constantly wants to be held. At first, we thought this was because of all the trauma he has been through with the hospital visits, getting shots, and blood being drawn. With no real answers, we turned to the internet. Even with the vast knowledge of the internet, it was hard to narrow it down to something. Earlier this week, Claire was talking to her Mom who had explained our situation to one of her friends (Lisa) who has kids of her own. Lisa had said the same thing happend with her kids and knew exactly what it was. She is not a doctor but diagnosed him with HoldMyAssitis. She said it was nothing serious but could develop into something very serious and contagious... PainInOurAssitis. Claire and I are happy to know what is wrong with Brendan and glad that it should go away on it's own with no medical treatment. Thanks Lisa for helping us diagnose Brendan.

Sleep

Claire finally was able to sleep through the entire night last night with out having to wake up to feed B at 3:30. We put he down to bed around 10:30 and he didn't wake up until 5:00 am. This was quite the news in our house this morning. I hope this is the start of many more sleep filled nights. Brendan did get his 2 month shots yesterday and was a fussy all afternoon. I hope he didn't sleep through the night because he didn't get much quality sleep yesterday afternoon. After sleeping all night, I was also afraid he was going to be up all day today. Not the case. He took a good long nap this afternoon to Daddy's delight. I guess we'll have to wait to see if he sleeps through the entire night tonight again. Cross your fingers for us.

May 23, 2006

Back Home

Little B update... He got released from the Hospital late Sunday afternoon about 2 hours before Daddy had to catch his flight to Boulder, CO. The doctors still don't know what caused his fever but guess that it was something viral. Thank goodness Grandma Toon was coming into town to help watch him while I was away. He's back to his old self (active, alert, and smiling) which makes us very happy. B was a little more fussy than usual but that might be expected after what he went through over the weekend. Thank you to everyone who called or sent us emails about Brendan. Claire and I were sure to pass on a kiss or zerbert to B from you.

A Little Perspective

Well... Claire and I have been baptized into the world of parenthood. No, I'm not talking about being sprayed with Brendan's fire hose during a change. This happened long ago. Up until last night we had not had to pull an all nighter because Little B had been fussing. All night turned into a very long day. We noticed that he was a little warm around 10:30 pm and was running a small fever (99 degrees). We were not concerned too much after doing research on the internet and discovered not unusual for babies to run slight fevers. Then at 6:00 am we took is temp again. This time it was 102.. Now, it was time to call the clinic. After talking to the doctor that called us back, it was decided we would bring him into the clinic. Before leaving for the hospital it had jumped to 103.7. NOT GOOD. Log story short, B was admitted to the hospital for at least overnight to run some tests, get IV fluids, and some antibiotics.

It's never fun to watch your child suffer or get poked with needles. Shortly after Brendan was admitted and in his hospital room, we overheard a doctor in the hallway. The doctor was introducing himself to someone and said "Hi, I'm from the organ transplant team". This sort of put things in perspective for us. It could be a lot worse. Hopefully, he'll be able to come home tomorrow.

Lost & Found

Brendan lost something on Sunday. It was something he was very attached to but I don't think he was that sad to see it go. He finally lost his umbilical cord stump. I say finally because (from what we read on the web) most babies lose theirs within the first 2 weeks. Claire and I were afraid he was already developing attachment issues which would make it impossible for us to get a babysitter and have a night to ourselves. We first noticed it fell off on Sunday morning but it was nowhere to be found in his diaper or outfit. We found it later on the glider in the nursery. It must have come off in the middle of the night when Claire was burping or feeding him.

Now, the question is to save the stump or throw it away. Weird... Gross... a little of both. Before, I was dead set on just throwing it away. But now I think I might keep it around. Who has attachment issues now?

April 11, 2006

Yesterday...The day that never existed

I just realized that yesterday was the first day we did not take any photos or video of Brendan. In his first 10 days, I think he has been photographed more times then I was my entire childhood. It's so easy today with digital cameras and video cameras to document almost every moment of his life. Just think. He could watch himself grow up from infant to preschool in timelapse. I'll be sure to take some pictures today so he doesn't feel like he's a second or third child.

April 10, 2006

Shrinking

We went to the doctor's office today for a checkup and it turns out Brendan is shrinking. Brendan measured 19.5" long after he was born. Three days later we went back to the hospital for a checkup (had to go back so soon because we didn't stay in the hospital the recommended 48 hours after birth) and he measured 21" long. Today, he measured 20" long. Our doctor just giggled when he saw the chart. "This is a very exact science of measuring the length of a baby." he told us with a grin. It turns out that Brendan is doing well. He has gained a pound since his last visit a week ago which made Claire very happy. She dreaded that he would weigh the same after she has been feeding him about every 2-3 hours. The only thing that our doctor showed a little concern about was his jaundice. We talked him out of sending Brendan for blood work. Hearing him cry while giving blood probably hurts Claire and I more than it hurts him. We just have to let him know if the jaundice gets any worse. That's all on the baby front. Bye for now.

April 07, 2006

1 Week Old

Brendan turned one week old today. Claire and I can't believe it's only been one week. It feels more like 1 month. Last night all we could think about was what we were doing a week ago. How much pain Claire was in or how we couldn't wait for him to be born. What a week it has been. We went from young married couple to parents in an instant. I'm a parent! Wow, that sounds wierd. We are very lucky to have Claire's Mom here to help us out for the first week and next. It's nice to have an extra set of hands. When we go to change him sometime, it reminds me of a surgery with some many hands around one person. My Mom comes out the for 2 weeks after she leaves. After that, we're on our own. I'm not too worried at this point. I think we'll be able to manage. This past week has been filled with lots of firsts. It's been both exhilarating and exhausting but I wouldn't trade it for the World.

April 06, 2006

Better than a movie...

BrendanI have determined that staring at your newborn child (doesn't matter if his eyes are open or closed) is one of the best things in the World. It's better than any movie you could watch. It's amazing at all the things you think about when you're looking at him. Here are some of the things I think about...
- How did I have a part in making something so beautiful?
- Is that normal? Is he supposed to move like that or make that sound? Should I call the doctor? Na.. he's fine.
- What sport is he going to like to play?
- Doctor, Lawyer, or Both!
- Does he know how much we love him?
- He's making a wierd face. Is he pooping? Does he need to be changed now?
- Claire and I are the luckiest people in the World.
And I could go on and on. Right now though, I am going to go hold my little boy and stare at him some more. Bye for now. New pictures are posted. Click here

Brendan's First Date

WalkToday, Brendan had one of his many to come firsts. He had his first play date (with an older women) and first walk today. Nic brought over Ava Grace (who just turned 1 last week) to visit Brendan and Mommy. The day was so nice here in Chicago so he had another first. We took him on his first walk. Not nearly as stressful as I thought it might be. We did take a few precautions like crossing the main street in the cross walk and at the light. Normally, we just sprint accross the 4 lane road. I think those days are over. More pics have been posted to the 1 month photo album. Click here to see them.

Photos and Labor Timeline

BrendanSOME PICTURES HAVE BEEN POSTED. Click on "Photos" link in the menu bar at the top or click here.
Many of the people we have heard from are amazed about how fast Claire gave birth. So, I have put down a brief timeline of events of Claire's labor.

9:44 pm - No contractions up until now.
9:45 pm - Claire's water breaks while brushing her teeth... fyi: A very good place to have that happen vs on the couch or in bed.
10:00 pm - Contractions start happening now about every 3 - 5 min.
12:15 am - Decided it's time to go to the hospital
1:00 am - Get to the hospital. Takes a women in labor awhile to get ready, down the stairs, and into the car.
3:45 am - Start pushing
4:20 am - Welcome Brendan into the World

Brendan is home now and Claire and I are trying to just soak it all in. His first night home on Saturday was rough. Claire and I were the stereotypical new parents... up all night, exhausted, and clueless. I had to make sure everything was alright with any noise or movement I heard from him. When he would cry, we would do the normal checks.. is he hungry, does he need a diaper change, and then plead with him to stop crying :-). Last night was a lot better. He slept from about 1:00 am to 5:00 am without waking up. Claire and I think he is getting cuter by the day but we might be a little biased.

March 31, 2006

And Brendan Makes Three

BrendanClaire gave birth to Brendan Lum Toon at 4:20 am this morning. He was 6 lbs. 14 oz. and 19.5" long. Claire did a fabulous job and delivered without any pain medication. More details to come. Keep checking back.

March 30, 2006

Procrastinator

The kid takes after his parents. All he needed was a deadline to get his butt in gear. Claire's water broke tonight at 9:45 pm. We are going to try to rest as much as we can tonight and go into the hospital in the early morning. Depending on the strength and frequency of the contractions, we might go to the hospital sooner. Keep checking back for more updates.

March 29, 2006

Stork ETA

The end (or beginning depending on how you look at things) is in sight. We had an appointment with the midwife today and everything still looks good. Despite being 1 week and 1 day past due, Mom and Baby are doing great. We have decided to give Buddha a deadline of Friday morning. If he doesn't start his journey out of the womb, we are going to help him. We figure he needs this deadline if he's a procrastinator like his parents. So, Claire is scheduled to be induced on Friday at 8:00 in the morning. The only way this would change if: a) Buddha starts labor himself before Friday or b) There is no available delivery rooms at the Hospital because everyone else in Chicago is having a baby on Friday. Wish us luck. Hopefully by the end of the weekend, there will be a picture of Baby Buddha on Toon-Time.

His Name Is...

Pokey. Well, that's what we are calling this kid until he is born. Now 5 days overdue, there doesn't seem to be any delivery in site. Claire is very ready to have this kid and be able to sleep on her stomach and not have to carry around the extra weight. Maybe Pokey will come today but I'm not counting on it.

Come and Gone

Well, March 21st has come and gone. As most of you know, that was Buddha's due date. We went to the doctor's this morning and Baby and Mommy are doing great. Our midwife thinks that everything looks good and she's anticipating the little guy to make his arrival soon. Claire, being the dedicated dental student, is still going to class and clinic.

Claire and I can't wait to meet him. I don't know how to convey how anxious we are. When you get this close or past your due date, it's worse than seeing all the Christmas presents under the tree on Christmas Eve. Going past the due date feels like you woke up Christmas morning and your parents said.. "Not today. You have to wait till New Years to open your gifts". BUMMER.

Well, I hope he comes soon. Keep checking back for more updates.

More Asian than Irish

Buddha SoapI tried my best to convince Buddha that it would be really cool to have his birthday on St. Patrick's Day, but apparently he didn't buy that argument because I'm still pregnant. I guess he's more Asian than Irish. My classmates even have a pool going to predict when he'll be born. For the past week when I walk into school in the morning, at least one person will say, "Damn, you're still pregnant. I'm out of the pool" and about 20 others will ask me to hold off till a certain date to be closer to the date and time they predicted. Sorry, guys, but when he's ready, I'm ready.

In any event, to celebrate St. Patrick's Day, we had some neighbors over for appetizers and drinks last night. It's probably the last time for quite a while that we'll be hosting anything, so it was nice to have people over. Hopefully now the neighbors will be a little more understanding in the next few months when our little bundle of joy is letting the entire building know he's hungry at 3am.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Buddha Likes His Ice Cream

At the appointment for the external version, an ultrasound was done before they started anything. We were relived to discover that during the night Buddha had moved head down. Yippee. Either he likes ice cream or we put the fear of God into him to turn. Our midwife was very curious on what we did to make him turn. I'm not sure if was anything that we did or he just decided it was time but here are 2 things we tried...

  • frozen peas on the top of Claire stomach while she elevated her pelvis

  • I talked to him but at the lower middle part of her belly instead of the side when I lay next to Claire in bed at night. I said things like... "If you don't turn this way, your going to be grounded until your 2. Stop giving Mommy a hard time. No more ice cream for you unless you turn." etc. Can you tell what kind of parent I am going to be? :-)

If you ask my Mother-In-Law, she will swear it was the talking to that she gave Buddha via a cell phone to tummy call that made him turn.
Now, that he is head down we are afraid that he's going to turn back to being transverse. The doctors and midwife said that it's very unusual for that to happen but we are worried none the less. So now, if I talk to him by speaking directly and close to Claire's belly, it will never be on the side like before. It will always be to the lower middle of her belly. I'm not taking any chances. If this is the only drama we have for this pregnancy, that will be fine with me.

Buddha Behaving Badly

Buddha's really done it this time. So bad, that mommy has sworn to give up ice cream to punish him. That's saying something when a pregnant women denies herself ice cream to punish her unborn child! Yesterday afternoon in our routine (now weekly) visits to the doctor, we discovered that Buddha was transverse (sideways in the womb). At this stage in the game, this is not good. The baby should be head down. If Buddha stays transverse, he will have to be delivered via c-section no questions asked. You don't have to be a doctor to realized the difficulties of delivering a baby sideways and not head first. I've learned throughout the pregnancy that the human body especially a woman's body is a amazing thing but this would be a very tall order. We have been told he was head down in previous visits but he must have moved for whatever reason. Our midwife scheduled us to come in first thing this morning to have an external version. This procedure involves the doctor moving the baby manually/externally while using an ultrasound to guide the movements. There is a very small chance that this could cause a great amount of distress to the baby which would then dictate an immediate c-section. Let's hope it doesn't come to that. I'll post another update later tonight to let you all know how the procedure went.

28 = 4

I can't believe how quickly Claire's due date is approaching (March 21st for those of you who didn't know). There are only 28 days left until D-day. This past weekend we were out eating topas with neighbors when I realized 28 days = 4 weekends. We only have 4 more weekends left of being a 2 person family! Don't get me wrong. I can't wait for Buddha to arrive but it's always been something that has been months away. Now, the baby arriving is very real.

For a couple of weeks now, it has seemed that we were ready for Buddha's arrival. All of the major purchases are made, various assortment of baby items are acquired, and the nursery is all ready to go. There is nothing left for us to do but sit back, relax, and wait for him to make his apperance. Now, I can think of a million things that still need to be done. Most of them are Bradley Method related (coaching stuff for the delivery) but a lot of things none the less. I guess it's just the reality of him coming in 4 weekends. Well, ready or not 28 = 4.

Baby Shower

Prego Girls Today my Mom and sister threw a beautiful baby shower for Buddha and me. They made tons of delicious food and the entire house was decorated for Christmas so it was very festive. So many people were very generous and brought beautiful gifts for Baby Buddha- toys, books, clothes to last till he's ready for kindergarten, and a "What Would Buddha Do?" bumper sticker. The best part of the day was just seeing everyone that came, especially my friends from college Liz and Megs. We all had fun showing off our buddha bellys (even if they had to cheat and add pillows to theirs). I want to say thank you to everyone who helped prepare and everyone who came to celebrate with us from the bottom of my belly.

Keep both hands on the stroller

Greg and Stroller Our first major pieces of baby equipment came last week. I started to put them together, scratched my head, cursed a little bit at the directions, and then continued. No wonder they tell you to figure out the car seat before you go to the hospital. We got the stroller and car seat working with each other. I should say INFANT car seat because I am finding out everything you buy for a baby needs to be replaced 6 months to a year later. I thought the wedding business was a money maker. It doesn't come close to the baby business. I am very impressed with the Zippy and how well it fits with the Graco car seat. For those of you who have not looked at baby stuff before, just ignore the last sentence. Claire practiced strapping Lamby (childhood stuffed animal) into the car seat and I practiced doing 360's with Lamby in the stroller. Good thing Lamby has a strong stomach.

According to the baby calendar my Mom got us, Buddha is due in 98 days. Gee, that seems soon. Claire is in the 25th week of her pregnancy this week. Click here to see all the belly pictures.

My first interaction with Buddha

Week 21 A couple of days ago, I had my first real interation with Buddha. Just about every night since Claire first felt the baby move, I put my hand on her belly and wait for him to kick. Usually, Claire tells me when he is kicking and I place my hand there. Sometimes I feel him kick and other times I don't. A few days ago I decided I was going to take matters in my own hands. I didn't want to wait for Claire to feel him kick. So, I got real close to her belly and spoke through my hand like a megaphone... "Daddy to Buddha.. Come in please." Sure enough he kicked my hand. "Say again Buddha. Over." Another kick. This went on for a couple of minutes with him kicking back after I said something. It was one of the coolest things to happen so far. Of course, this is nothing new for Claire. She feels Buddha moving around and kicking her all day and all night. But for me, it was an unreal experience.

Claire is in the 24th week of her pregnancy this week. Click here to see all the belly pictures.

Christmas comes early

Week 21 This past weekend we got our Christmas tree. I know it's not even Thanksgiving yet. Since we are going to be away forThanksgiving and two weeks for Christmas this year, we wanted to be able to enjoy our tree. Tonight we got the lights and ornament up and the house smells great.

This weeks belly picture was taken in front of our tree. It is the week 21 picture. Click here to see all the belly pictures.

Baby Buddha

Baby Buddha Some of you already know that we already have a name for the baby while it's growing inside Claire. We refer to the baby as Buddha (for obvious reasons). Yesterday, we breathed a sigh of relief when we found out at our 20 week ultrasound that Buddha was a boy. We didn't consider that if Buddha was a girl, she probably would not be pleased that we referred to her as Buddha while she was growing. My experience with the opposite sex is that they don't like being called fat or anything that might imply that they are fat.

Everything went well at the ultrasound. It started out on a positive note. While waiting to be called to go into the ultrasound room, I was able to feel the baby move for the first time. I was expecting a thump against my hand but it was more of a clicking feeling. I guess Buddha would have to be David Beckham's kid to cause a thump at the size he is now. Very cool none the less. During the ultrasound, they identified all the major organs and determined that Buddha was healthy and where he should be developmentaly at this stage. Click here to see all the 20 week ultrasound pictures.

Look for an updated look for the Toon-Time.com site in the next week. I am in the process of a redesign.

Belly News

Week19 This was a big week on the belly front. Claire felt the baby move for the first time this weekend. We have two theories on why this is.... 1) After dressing up like a pregnant nun this weekend and having to pad the belly to make it look bigger, the baby was afraid it was in danger of being replaced if it didn't start moving more. 2) Claire felt the baby move all night after having Coke with pizza for dinner. She has not been drinking much caffeine during the pregnancy and the baby could have been all hopped up on caffeine. Here is this week's belly picture... Week 19. This week we go in for the 20 week ultrasound. We can't wait.

It's official...

Week18 It's official. Claire has taken the lead in the belly contest. Her belly is officially bigger than my beer/pasta baby that I've been growing the past couple of years. Even when I stick my belly out as far as it can go, I don't stand a chance. In case you couldn't figure it out, Claire's week 18 belly picture is on the left..

Introducing Baby Toon

Everyone, meet Baby Toon. Baby Toon, meet everyone.

Baby ToonGreg and I discovered in late July that we're expecting a little bundle of joy in late March. We couldn't be happier, especially now that we can share our big news with the rest of the world. Today we went in for our first ultrasound and were able to see the baby's skull, spine, arms, and legs. We even saw the little heart pumping away! The baby was VERY active while we were there- sucking his thumb, waving his arms around, and pretty much doing somersaults. The doctor thinks everything looks good and Baby Toon is on target to make an appearance on March 21. Click here to see more pictures.
